Our team was challenged by The University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) to create a prototype to reduce CO2 emission by business travel. We focused on raising awareness about the greenhouse gas emissions produced during the business travel of the UMCU employees. An additional desired goal is also to reduce the business travel costs.
After conducting interviews with various UMCU employees, we created the Emission Passport, embedded into UMCU’s internal website and including:
- Department-wide emissions and goals, accessible from other departments and including the least emitter. This would raise awareness into the employees and add an element of competition to encourage people to take action about the business travel emissions problem.
- Personal yearly emission breakdown. An example of effective communication could be “the amount of CO2 produced by this trip is comparable to the one produced heating up one house for a year”
- European train map, with locations that people must, can, and are encouraged to access by train instead of planes.
- Stamps passport to visualize the travel credits, to keep track of the trips and the carbon footprint emitted by year
- Reward and off-set system
